Application Upgrade

I am new to altris, but have a lot of sccm/sms/novell deployments. I need to create a package for application upgrade. I already have a vendor msi and created a TRANSFORM. Trying to read symantec doc and not getting a clear picture. Can someone try to point me to a site with some examples and maybe explains the difference between packages and policy’s? Software and software catalog?
