I need a solution

Hi everyone,

I have an issue with the couple DS 6.9 SP6 and Windows 8 and 8.1

My Sient Installation Process Job (Windows 8 and 8.1) contain this basics tasks :

- Diskpart script

- Windows installation with unattend.xml (DAgent installed with FirstLogonCommand)

- 1st Script Task (On Production)

- 2nd Script Task (On Production)

Randomly the 2nd Task is not run on the client !!

The 1st Task was completed sucessfully but sometime the 2nd Task is not started.

Is that someone already encountered this problem ?

Thanks in advance.

Images From Vendor Not SysPrepped (Is This A Problem for Agent?)

I need a solution

Hello,

We have about 200 machines that were imaged and setup by an outside vendor. We discovered that these machines were not SysPrepped. People are currently using them and would be a disaster to have to recall them all to do a new image.

We are planning push the Altiris agent to all 200 machines. Could this present a problem with duplicate GUIDs and give us a problem managing the machines?

We are running SMP 7.1 SP2

Thanks for any guidance.

PECT Agent Missing from Automation DS 7.5

When I attempt to boot a computer into automation (WinPEx64) via PXE, it gets stuck at this screen:

automation.png

This is probably because it doesn't contain the PECT agent files, or any of the files that should be listed in the screenshot below.  The Symantec folder is missing, as well as the Altiris folder.

If I boot to autmation using a boot disk or automation folder, the files are there.

Hi All

I have used HOWTO85100 to implement WinPE 4 on DS 7.1.

The automation works fine, but the PXE is unable to build a correct image. I get and PXE-E77 error. I have gone thourgh all the KB about this issue but no luck. Is the any who has tried this HOWTO and got it to work?

DS 6.9 SP5 MR3 - intermittent failure to copy unattend.xml

I need a solution

Got a strange one here.

2 organisations - have both migrated their DS to new (virtual) servers. Were both on Server 2003 R2, now on 2008 R2, running DS 6.9 SP5 MR3 - ie. the latest version prior to SP6.

The image deployment process is fairly generic, although I don't use the Altiris-provided GUI for image deployment.  It's a Windows 7 Enterprise WIM image - 1 of them is 32 bit, the other is 64 bit.

My image deployment works in the following way, and it has worked flawlessly ever since Windows 7 was released:

  • Boot to WinPE (32-bit)
  • Map the drives via PXE redirection
  • Create partitions/format the drives
  • Apply the image via imagex
  • Perform token replacement on unattend.xml - the only token is the computername.  One of the environments uses %SERIALNUM% for the computername, the other one uses %ASSETTAG%
  • Copy the unattend.xml down to \windows\panther\unattend.xml
  • Copy drivers down based on the model
  • Inject the drivers
  • Reboot - and Windows takes care of the rest - the dagent installs via setupcomplete.cmd

The intermittent issue I'm seeing is - the PC's are failing to get the unattend.xml copied down properly. The reason I know this is because the token-replaced file is sitting in the express share under \TEMP\%ID%.xml.  And the deployment process "thinks" that the file copies down to the client machine OK.  But when the machine boots up the first time, it doesn't get the right host name which proves that it's a problem copying down the token-replaced XML file.  How do I know this?  Because the unattend.xml file on the image used an "*" for the hostname, so the machines that fail to get the token replaced file copied down boot up with a ORGNAME-SERIAL type of hostname.  Proof that the token replaced xml file didn't copy down.

Of course, when I put a pause (press any key) in the job after the file copy, it's fine - which leads me to believe that it's a timing issue.

I'm currently trialing the use of a PING -n 10 127.0.0.1 >NUL after the file copies down, in the thought that it's a timing thing.  This never occurred when the server was 2003, so I can only think that it's an issue with the express share now being on a 2008 R2 server and Windows PE 2.1.

This is one of the most bizarre bugs/issues I've seen in DS in the years I've been working with it, and I'm wondering if anyone has any suggestions/fixes or if anyone has seen it before.

Ghost File Preservation Prompting for Span Files

I need a solution

I'm working on a process to upgrade my XP package Servers to Windows 7 from their local image files. I can get the process working but and I'm preserving the folder that the images load from. Ghost starts imaging fine from the .gho file but it prompts for  the span file as soon as it gets to the first one. It's like the engine knows the .gho is a image file and needs to be loaded but not the .ghs so it can be loaded automatically. Is there something I'm missing here so I can bypass the prompt? I'm using the following command line.

ghost32 -clone,mode=prestore,src=c:\localimage\test_ghost.gho:1,dst=1:1 -preserve=c:\localimage

I've also tried variations using src=1:1\localimage\test_gho:1

How to deploy an image to a smaller hard drive on a virtual machine?

I need a solution

Hi, I'm very new to Altiris. We are currently using Altiris DS 7.1 SP2 in a school environment. I have created a disk image(x64) on a 500GB hard disk which has three partitions(39MB OEM partition, 11GB system recovery partition, and 470GB OS partition).

Now I want to use it as a master image and deploy it to another virtual machine which has 100GB hard disk(45GB C: drive and 50GB D: drive) on it. Is it possible to achieve this goal? If it is possible, how do I make it happen?

Look forward to your reply. Thanks.

Delay when running jobs in WinPE

After our clients boot to WinPE 4.0 there's about a 2.5 minute delay before either the initial deployment windo will come up or the jobs will start to run. This is a little annoying when trying to image a bunch of new clients as you have to wait a while. Is this delay normal? Is thier anyway to speed it up? What are others experiancing for delays?

Altiris 6.9 sp6 with winPE 4.0 preboot not multicasting.

I need a solution

I know that there are plenty of threads here about multicasting and I have checked around to make sure that I have a unique issue.

I am trying to multicast in a winPE environment through Altiris. I am using a Windows 2012 server with Opentftp. The clients will communicate with eachother to find a master and act like it will multicast just fine. Once the master is decided after some time it will display a message that there are not enough clients to multicast. I have gone through the configurations to set the clients required to multitask at 4 and have more than enough connected to the server to trigger the process.

I have also configured my Cisco switch for IGMP snooping with a querier and have captured multiple sessions with Wireshark. I have also tried this same setup but with a Linux preboot environment instead. By doing this the clients will decide on a master and multicast properly. Do to the ease of updating drivers in winPE compared to linux I would rather try to get that working instead.

REsource import tool - import image on Site server

Are you able to import a ghost image onto a site server rather than te NS ? Previously when I imaged a machine in 7.1 it was stored on the local site server, and refrenced by the NS to replicate. Now that i'v upgraded to 7.5 (and it removed all my images on the SS) i would still like to keep the reference the same.

New to 7.5 and I need to be able to configure the computer name in the sysprep file. We have a large number of new computers earch year that aren't in the deployment database. I've read some stuff online but haven't found an exact solution to this. So how can I change the computer name in the sysprep file after the image is deployed?

Basic connection between Deployment sever with Deployment Linux agent

I need a solution

This is the first time I am using the Symantec Altiris Deployment Solution.

I download and installed the trialware Dell_3_2 MR2 deployment solution and also installed the SQL 2008 database on a Windows server 2008 R2 server. I launched the deployment console (version 6.9 SP5). Then I downloaded and installed a Dell server with Linux deployment agent (altiris-adlagent-2.6-86.x86_64.bin) and modified the Adlagent.conf and started the deployment agent. I used the IP address and ping them both correctly.

Unfortunately, the Linux server never shown on the deployment console. Did the client ever connected to the deployment server? I most missed something?

I tried to look for more information at the Linux client and the directory under altiris only shown deployment only. I can not find any log file or anything else to helpme to debug. Any suggestions? Thank you.

Hi All

Is there a smart way to deploy HP, Lenovo and Dell drivers and BIOS updates with SMP 7.1/7.5.

I know that they all have seperate tools to deploy Drivers and BIOS, but how do you implement it with SMP?

Unable to add Preboot driver after updating to WinPE 4.0

I need a solution

Hi all

I’ve followed this HOWTO article: http://www.symantec.com/docs/HOWTO85100 that updates from WinPE 2.1 to WinPE 4.0. And the update seems to be working fine since I’m able to deploy after the upgrade on our old series from Lenovo (X230). But it’s not working on the new series (X240) because it cannot PXE boot. It just displaying: Restarting DHCP client service: retry 1...

I know this is caused by a missing Preboot driver but when I try open Driver Management I’m just presented with a blank page (see screenshot below). I positively know that this was working just before the update. Anybody knows why this is happening?

And for the record: Using Bootwiz will just ends in a Not Responding mode...

Kind regards

DS 6.9SP6 - Imaging with USB boot disk?

I need a solution

I created a USB boot disk using boot disk creator and I'm booting a machine into the automation partition using it.

When I schedule a "Distribute Image" job for the machine and boot it using the USB stick, the machine immediately reboots once it receives the waiting job and returns "Error -99 during imaging process." I've tried what's listed in this KB, but it did not help.

If I try running any other job, it also fails returning "Error 1 during script execution."

These jobs work fine if I manually enter the commands in the cmd window of Automation. They only fail when I try scheduling a job for them.
